“You’re traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That’s the signpost up ahead – your next stop, The Twilight Zone!” Cue the music!!!

It’s officially moving day! January 2nd is here! Also, Its January 11th and I have been moving so “sorry not sorry” for the delay.  Anyway, let’s get into the fun details about my flight!

If you want to see items that we used on the plane, clothes we wore, or anything else Click HERE for that list.

January 2nd

We left on January 2nd and took the Alaska Airlines flight 331 from ORD to SFO on a Boeing 737-800. Before anyone asks NO, the door did not fall off and we did not have to make an emergency landing.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about you can google it.  On with good news, we did land safely and had an amazing dinner with Logan at China Live in downtown San Fran.  It’s the second time we’ve been there and Logan picked out some amazing dishes. We had the Sheng Jian Bao dim sum, peking duck, gua bao and Mahi. It was delicious!

With full bellies, we crashed at a hotel and made sure we had everything for the big travel day.

January 3rd

Our flight wasn’t untill 8pm so we were lucky to sleep in.  We had a quick lunch before Logan’s Uber picked him up at 1pm.  Scott and I had a rental car and thought it would be nice to take a little scenic drive on California’s Highway 1.

Before the flight

We arrived at SFO at 4pm which was early since check-in didn’t open till 4:45pm.  Our flight was Singapore airlines flight SQ 33 SFO to SIN.  The flight time………….wait for it…………. 17.5 hours.   Yes, you read that correctly.  Boarding didn’t begin till 7:40pm so we passed the time in the United Polaris lounge.  Singapore airlines doesn’t  have a lounge at SFO but if you fly business class you do have the perk of the United Polaris Lounge.  If you want to read a review on the lounge I found this review to be helpful.

After lounging and eating, Scott and I both changed into comfortable clothes for the flight. I highly advise anyone that is traveling this long to not wear blue jeans or contacts. Think comfortable and easy.  Click here for our travel list.

The long flight

Okay, time to literally buckle up for the long haul.  Our plane was an Airbus A350-900 ULR, the business class section is set up as a 1-2-1 seating. Scott and I had window seats 25k and 26k. First impression was amazing!  The flight attendants were personal and very inviting with smiles on their faces. We settled into our spacious and comfortable seats and prepared for take off. After reaching altitude we had champagne and “warm” nuts for a snack.  Scott wanted to emphasize the “warm“(insert eye roll).

Not long after the snack, they started to prepare for dinner service.  The appetizer course was peppered salmon with seaweed salad, pickled baby yellow and red beetroot. For dinner I had the braised short rib (that I pre ordered on the app) and Scott had the Seabass (he too, ordered this on the app).  A wide selection of bread was available and there were small bites available for dessert as well.  Check out the pics below to see our food.

At this point into the trip, many people had their beds made and started to sleep.  Scott and I had a plan: to fight jet lag we were going to adjust our sleeping time.  Before the flight we set our clocks to Penang time, when we were served dinner on the plane we treated it like lunch.  After our dinner/lunch we stayed up for another 6 hours (which was 7pm, Penang time). There is a large assortment of movies and games on the flight and Wifi is also included.  We found things to pass the time.  I took an hour before bed to brush my teeth, wash my face, moisturize, do my hair and chug some water. Scott and I had our beds made and got some shut eye.

With our earplugs in, eye mask on and our bodies exhausted we slept well on the plane.  We woke up with about 5.5 hours remaining at around midnight Penang time. At this time breakfast was served. I had the pancakes with mascarpone cheese and Scott had the wonton noodle soup. Both were really good! At this point it was only 1am Penang time so we laid back down for another 2.5 hours.  We woke back up with a little less than 2 hours remaining.  Scott and I changed into clean clothes, brushed our teeth, I took my hair wrap out and put on makeup. we were all set to land in Singapore.

After our 17.5 hour flight we had landed in Singapore! But wait, there is more!  We had a short layover in Singapore at Changi airport and a short flight to our new home! We flew with Singapore airlines on another Boeing 737-800 and the flight time was about an hour.  We had finally landed in Penang! immigration was easy to get through but I do have to warn people; As of January 1st Malaysia requires you to fill out a “Malaysia digital arrival card” also known as MDAC.  It has to be filed within 3 days of your arrival. We submitted ours the day before we left just to make sure it would get processed. There is a picture below of what it looks like. If you come for a visit,  Scott and/or I will be able to help you fill it out.

I think I covered most of everything from our travels! Here is that link again for everything we used/packed.  If you have any questions feel free to comment or email us.

Next post I will have pictures of the house!

Sending love from Penang,

Ry

    1. Hi Wendi! the UV light is supposed to kill 99% of germs from your toothbrush. Instead of throwing it in my carry on I Thought it might be more “clean” in the UV holder. It charges by a usbc and lasts for a long time. It has a 5 minute timer to turn off when you close it. I just found it on amazon. We Miss you too!!!!

Ummm… my only question…, what the heck is a Garrett’s popcorn shop doing in Penang???

I liked how you treated your long flight… by going to local time immediately. The food looked amazing. I wear my Vuori joggers on all my long flights… so comfortable. Your hair wrap thingy is cool.

Toots for now. Happy you guys landed safely!!!

    1. I was so shocked to see Garrett’S!!!! I guess they really are world famous. LOL! I will check out the Vuori joggers, I only have a pair of leggings from them.
